I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my answer. That was exactly my point. They were not stupid at all. None of them. My point was that the guy made it sound like the immigrants could tell the Brazilian authorities anything because they wouldn't know it anyway. He couldn't be further from the truth. And anyway the burden of proof (in that case just a declaration) was with the immigrant.
During my research and after several translations, I was told by someone involved historically with the Russian language that there was a special word (almost like a slang) used to describe those German colonists (settlers). And that was the specific word used in my Great great Grandfather's birth certificate. In my case, my ancestors were Germans born in Russian occupied territory.
