Re: FN ZWAR, FREIGANG (Antwort)

Hi Tammy,

Honestly,

I don't know what to believe...

I am basing my information off of a Zwar family history book that was written by a Zwar descendant. I am unsure of where her family stories came from and if they were even truly correct??

In the Zwar family book (has you relative seen this book??) it states that Christian and Augusta took their child Friedrich from Poland to Volhynia in 1862. Later in life Friedrich took his family to Canada.

It later states that their other son Johann Zwar (and brother of Freidrich) came to the United States with his two oldest children Emilia and Gustave in 1914, to North Dakota. Then it say: One sister, Johanna Caroline Zwar, immigrated with her husband, Rev. Gustave Frigang, in 1913.

From all of this information, I am to believe that the Johann mentioned would be the son of Christian and Augusta.

This written story follows true to the stories we were told that my Oma and Opa were second cousins. My Oma was descended from Friedrich's line and my Opa was descended from Johann's line.

If of course the marriage record stands and Johann's parents are Carl and Julianna, then nothing my family has stated is true. Does this make sense??
My cousin and I also have had our DNA tested and we share more DNA together than I do with cousins on the other side of our family, suggesting we are doubly related with more shared common ancestors.

My Uncle read the marriage record and he said that the names listed were not parents. He said they were witnesses. Does anyone else know if this could be the case???

Hello,

I am researching the Freigang-Zwar family. I have an older relative (grandmother's cousin) who is in her 90's. She is the great-niece of the Baptist pastor Rev. Gustav Freigang (died in Washington State) and also Karoline Freigang who was married to Johann Zwar. Johann & Karoline had children Gustave, Emil and Emilia

I have located the record of the marriage of Johann Zwar and Karoline Freigang m.09 Jul 1891 Rozyszcze, Volyn' but the parents don't seem to be matching up with the information I see from the family.

According to the marriage record Johann's parents are Carl Zwar & Juliana Friske. The death record of Rev. Gustav's wife Johanna Zwar also lists her father as Carl.

If anyone has any insight on the discrepancies it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ist ja lange her. Anneli ist mit meinen Bruder verheiratet, sie haben vier Kinder und wohnen in der Nähe von Tönder, ich bin in Höjer geboren und wohne seit Urzeiten in Dortmund.

Hi Wendy:

You must be my second cousin. My grandmother Florentyna Grenke was a younger sister of your grandmother Amalie Grenke, and your father Arthur Zwar would be a cousin of my mother, although they seem not to know each other.

I notice this thread is on Karlinufka. I am pretty sure the “Karlinufka” village where Ludwig Grenke lived was Karnilowka, in the Kostopol district of the Rovno Province of Volhynia. It is in the same place as the modern day village of Karpilovka in the Ukraine at about 51 degrees 24 minutes North and 26 degrees 39 minutes East (about 10 km north of the Town of Sarny); in case you were looking for it.

Re: Kolonie Karlinufka (Antwort)

Leah,

Your commentary about the Zwar family suggests that the Karlinufka you are looking for should perhaps be somewhat close to Kolowert. The closest one I am aware of is the one that was previously being discussed in this thread. It was located, according to historical info, on the north side of the Slucz River but it has never been found on a topographical map so we don't know the precise location.

Please note also that this area was in Tuczyn Parish after 1888. Prior to that, they would have been part of the Zhitomir Parish but they would not have traveled all the way to worship there. They would have worshiped in a local chapel or their school. Baptisms and deaths would have been handled by the local Kantor. Marriages and communion were conducted by the pastor as he traveled through the region several times a year.

SGGEE might help with your search in the Kalisz region as well. You may be able to take the family back another generation or two.

Re: Kolonie Karlinufka (Antwort)

Hello Jerry and thank you.

I have very limited information but I do know this:

My Ur Oma, Amalia Grenke is listed as being born in Karlinufka, Wolhynien, Russia on February 3rd, 1899 to Ludwig and Pauline Grenke (nee Witkowski)
Ludwig's parents were Kristof and Amalia Grenke (nee Shorshinski)

Amalia's siblings were:
Karl
Emilie
Florentine
Pauline
Heinrich
Gottlieb
Kristof

In 1912 Amalia and her family immigrated to Manitoba Canada where they stayed for awhile before returning to Karlinufka prior to 1914. On July 15 1915 they were forced out of their home due to the war and fled to Siberia. Some time after when it was safe, they returned to Wolhynien where Amalia married Emil Zwar son of Johann and Karolin Zwar. They stayed and ran the Zwar family farm until until 1940 at which time they moved to Germany to farm until 1950 when they immigrated back again to Canada where they both lived until their deaths.

According to family records Emil Zwar was baptised by Pastor M. Jeske in 1923 in Kolowert, Wolhynien.

Emil's father Johann was born in 1871 in Wolhynien.

Johann's parents were Christian (1839) and Augusta (1840) Zwar. They moved to Wolhynien from Kaliz, Poland in 1862 and both lived there until their deaths. They had 7 children. The eldest of those 7 seven children was named Friedrich. He was the brother to Johann.

Friedrich had a daughter named Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina was also my Ur Oma.
My great grandparents were 1st cousins and my fathers parents were second cousins.

Friedrich's history lists him as having moved to Wolhynien at the age of 4. He attended the Lutheran church in Zhitomir. He and his father were both carpenters. In 1881 he married Juliana Hinz and bought a farm in the village of Kolowert. In 1905 Friedrich took his wife and 12 children to Canada but in less than a year also returned back to Kolowert to his 60 acre farm. In 1912 Friedrich decided to move to East Prussia in Angerupp.

The previous discussion was about a specific Karlinufka for which we know the general region of location but which we haven't found anywhere on a map.

There are at least 3 other Karlinufka in Volhynia where Germans are known to have lived. To determine which is the correct one for your family, we will need to know more details such as family names and dates of any events if you know them.

For additional help on a site where English is the primary language, go to http://www.sggee.org . That site and wolhynien.de work cooperatively together to assist people with their research regarding Germans in Volhynia.
